June 13th, 2007BOSTON
CHINATOWN—On Sunday, May 21, 2006, American Chinese Christian
Educational and Social Services, Inc. (ACCESS) dedicated its newly
renovated site at 244-246 Harrison Avenue in Chinatown’s Tai Tung
Village, where the agency has been operating since its founding in
1992. ACCESS is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian community
service agency created to empower Chinese families in and around
Boston. ACCESS focuses on serving immigrant families, with a holistic
Christian approach. The renovation of 244-246 Harrison doubles the
agency’s space for its programs, which include an after-school and
summer full-day enrichment program for grades K-5, English for
Speakers of Other Language classes for adult learners, a Mothers
group and Mothers ESOL classes, as well as income tax return
preparation assistance each spring.
Pastor
Thomas Pang of Boston Chinese Episcopal Church offered a prayer for
the Chinatown community to open the event. ACCESS Founder Jamson Lam
presented the 2nd annual ACCESS College Scholarship
Awards, given to two alumni of the agency’s enrichment program.
Cecilia Wong will be attending Baylor University in Texas this fall
to study physical therapy. Aaron Cheung has been attending Boston
College, studying nursing. Pastor James Tan, Pastor Emeritus of
Boston Chinese Evangelical Church offered a prayer of dedication for
the continued work of the agency in the Chinatown community.
The
project was generously supported by contributions from numerous
individuals, as well as grants from the Chinatown Trust Fund, Ronald
McDonald House Charities, the Memorial Church of Harvard University,
and a no-interest loan from the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent
Association through WinnResidential, the management company of Tai
Tung Village. Mr. and Mrs. Wong, owners of the Empire Garden
Restaurant, presented a gift to ACCESS during the dedication
celebration. Volunteers who supported the project were honored at
the celebration.
