A Volunteer Urgently Needed (Archive)

Task: to administer a brief English proficiency test to applicants to our adult ESOL program.

Preferred availability: Monday and Wednesday, 9:15-11:30 a.m.

Qualifications: Ability to read, speak, and write in English and Chinese. Fluency in both Cantonese and Mandarin is desirable, but we will accept a person who is fluent in one dialect but has at least a working knowledge of the other.

There is no need to develop the test as ACCESS has been using our own test for years.

American Chinese Christian Educational and Social Services, Inc. (ACCESS) is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian outreach community service agency serving Chinese families in and around Boston with a holistic Christian approach. We strive to help bridge generation and culture gaps within families, believing that health and reconciliation are possible through Christ. We hope to further the understanding of both the American and Chinese cultures for each generation; we also encourage access to this multi-cultural society and to each other within the family.

We are seeking Christian staff and volunteers. A person may apply to serve in more than one position if his or her skills and experiences are appropriate. Commitment to one semester is required; commitment to a school year is preferred. There is also the possibility of job-sharing (e.g., two people co-teaching one class). Volunteer staff are welcome. Application procedures are the same for paid staff and volunteers, since they may share the same job descriptions and responsibilities.

Currently Available Opportunities:

THE ADULT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
PROGRAM (ESOL)
Teacher (Part-time
position)
Qualification:
Training and experience in teaching
preferred. We will consider appropriate non-degree holding applicants. Chinese bilingual skills preferred for lower
levels. Mandarin speaking preferred. Native speakers preferred for upper levels.
Description:
Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Semesters run from September to February, March to August.
Starting salary:
$14.29 an hour for staff with college degrees. Teachers are paid 12 hours a week, including lessons preparations and attendance at supervision, prayer meetings and staff meetings.
Tutor/Language
Partner (Volunteer positions only)
Description:
Tutor one to three student(s) of the same level at least one
hour a week. Supervision will be provided. Tutoring schedules may be worked out on an individual basis.

AFTER SCHOOL & SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
(EP) (K2 to 5th grade)

Teacher (Part-time position during
the school year and higher hours during the summer)
Qualification:
Experience working with children
required. Training in child care and development, teaching or related fields
preferred. We will consider appropriate non-degree holding applicants.
Chinese bilingual skills preferred. Cantonese speaking preferred.
Description:
The after school program is operated Monday through Friday
3:15 to 6:00 p.m. from September to June. The summer program runs in three sessions from the first week
of July to the second week of August. Staff are needed on the academic,
enrichment, field trip, physical fitness and Bible teams.
Starting salary:
$14.29 an hour for staff with college degrees. Teachers are paid 20 hours a
week, including lessons preparations and attendance at supervision and
staff meetings. There are a few Early Release days and full days on some holidays, February and April school vacation weeks.
Big
Brother/Sister (Volunteer positions only)
Description:
At least one hour a week with a child or a sibling
group. Supervision will be provided. Scheduling schedules may be worked out on an individual
basis.
Homework and
Activity Assistants (Volunteer positions only)
Description:
At least one hour a week during after school program
hours. Supervision will be provided. During the summer program, assistants are needed in the
academic, enrichment and field trip teams.
